The Plaza de Toros de Antequera is one of the oldest and most distinctive bullrings in Andalusia, located next to Paseo Real, opposite Puerta de Estepa, in the heart of the city’s historic centre. Its Neo-Mudejar architecture and intense cultural activity make it a benchmark for fans and a leading tourist attraction.
Entering the Antequera bullring is stepping into more than a century and a half of Andalusian bullfighting tradition, discovering a unique building and experiencing up close the excitement of the bullfighting festival.
Construction of the bullring began in 1847, under the direction of Manuel García del Álamo and continued by Rafael Mitjana, and it was inaugurated on 20 August 1848. The bullring currently has a capacity of 8,268 seats, distributed over two levels with eleven staircases and eight entrance gates.
The façade combines exposed brick with whitewashed sections, with a main shaded entrance built during the rehabilitation works of the 1980s, following the style of Antequera master builders of the 18th century. Inside, around the ring, are the seating tiers, along with pens, chutes and service areas. The venue also houses the Antequera Bullfighting Museum, with suits of lights, historic posters and pieces related to bullfighting.
The Antequera bullring hosts the Spring Fair and the Royal August Fair every year, the latter featuring the traditional Goyesca bullfight as its central event. In addition to bullfighting events, the venue has hosted concerts, film shoots and cultural and institutional events, establishing itself as a vibrant space throughout the year.
