Information about the Antequera Bullring

The Plaza de Toros de Antequera is one of the oldest and most unique bullrings in Andalusia, located next to the Paseo Real, opposite the Puerta de Estepa, in the heart of the city’s historic center. Its Neo-Mudéjar architecture and intense cultural activity make it a benchmark for fans and a first-rate tourist attraction.

Entering the Antequera bullring means delving into more than a century and a half of Andalusian bullfighting tradition, discovering a unique building, and experiencing the emotion of the bullfighting festival up close.

The construction of the bullring began in 1847, under the direction of Manuel García del Álamo and continued by Rafael Mitjana, and was inaugurated on August 20, 1848. The bullring currently has a capacity of 8,268 seats, distributed over two floors with eleven staircases and eight entrance gates.

The facade combines exposed brick with whitewashed panels, featuring a main shaded gate built during the 1980s renovation, following the style of 18th-century Antequera master builders. Inside, around the bullring, are the stands, along with corrals, pens, and service dependencies. The venue also houses the Antequera Bullfighting Museum, with bullfighters’ costumes, historic posters, and pieces related to bullfighting.

The Antequera bullring hosts the Spring Fair and the Royal August Fair each year, the latter featuring the traditional Goyesca Bullfight as its central event. In addition to bullfighting events, the venue has been the setting for concerts, filmings, and cultural and institutional events, consolidating its position as a vibrant space throughout the year.
